1st/6th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment

Ledbury, Herefordshire

1st July 1916

34

Killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme - they left their frontline trenches at 7:40 am but lost over 80 men before the regiment had passed their own lines at Mailly. Forced to withdraw later that day as casualties mounted when they faced heavy enemy barrage and intense machine gunfire - 120 killed and missing, over 300 wounded - Albert was one of the many whose body was never discovered after the war
