Killed by shellfire near the village of Montbrehain after a successful attack when handing over instructions to the American regiment who were relieving them

Military Cross with Bar, Mentioned in Despatches

Originally buried at Ramicourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Aisne, France. Military Cross April 1917 for gallantry - rushed mine crater killing enemy and dispersing the rest with three others. Wounded in May 1917. Aug 18 returns to France. Posthumous award Bar to MC Dec 1918 for gallantry when flank hit by MG fire, drove forward, captured post and held position. William's nephew Cyril is also remembered on this memorial - his nephew Cyril was killed on board HMS Indefatigable at the Battle of Jutland in 1916
