Killed in action in an advance with the 1st/4th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers where he was attached from the 1st/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who were also involved in the same advance. The advance took place in an area near the Quadrangle not far from High Wood on the Somme. Unfortunately the advance was held up by the British barrage not lifting, counter attacks from the enemy and a lack of coherent planning
