Killed in action near the craters of St Eloi - the battalion were in the midst of it when 2/3 mines were blown under the craters, it is unclear when Bert was killed. Either in the explosions, the hostility around the attempt to recover those buried alive including the garrison and tunnellers, or the aftermath when the British were attempting to re-consolidate the position around the now enlarged craters where some British shells and mortar fire went short and hit their own lines
