On board SS Lancastria outside the port of St Nazaire, France which was full of the remains of the BEF and civilians being rescued from France after the German invasion. It was bombed and then strafed by planes. Eric was listed as missing after the sinking.

The SS Lancastria was waiting off the coast for the remains of the BEF to be evacuated, those left after Dunkirk evacuations, as many as 9,000 men and civilians may have been on board when it was hit by German bombs - only 2,500 made it home.
